IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Take for Study Abroad?

If you are planning to study abroad from India in 2026, you will almost certainly need to prove your English language proficiency to your university and your visa officer. Three tests dominate the landscape: IELTS (International English Language Testing System), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic). All three are internationally recognised. All three are accepted by universities across the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, and Ireland. But they are not identical — they differ significantly in format, difficulty perception, availability, cost, and which universities and visa applications prefer them. This guide gives you an honest, comparison so you can choose the one that gives you the best shot.

What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's most widely taken English language test. It is jointly owned and administered by the British Council, IDP Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. IELTS is available in two formats: IELTS Academic (for university admission and professional registration) and IELTS General Training (for immigration and secondary schooling). For study abroad purposes, you need IELTS Academic. The test has four components: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes), and Speaking (11 to 14 minutes, conducted face-to-face with a human examiner). Each section is scored from 0 to 9 in 0.5 band increments. Your overall band score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. Most UK, Australian, Canadian, and German universities require an overall IELTS score of 6.0 to 7.0 with minimum scores in each band typically set at 5.5 or 6.0.

What is TOEFL?

TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service) and is primarily used for university admissions in the USA, though it is accepted by universities worldwide. The test is entirely computer-based and consists of four sections: Reading (54 to 72 minutes), Listening (41 to 57 minutes), Speaking (17 minutes — recorded responses, no human examiner during the test), and Writing (50 minutes). The total test duration is approximately 3 to 4 hours. Each section is scored from 0 to 30, giving a total score of 0 to 120. Most US universities require TOEFL scores of 80 to 100 overall for graduate programmes. TOEFL is slightly less accepted than IELTS for UK visas but is fully accepted for US, Canadian, and Australian student visas.

What is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is administered by Pearson and is a fully computer-based test including computer-scored speaking responses. This is its key differentiator: there is no human examiner involved in any section. The test includes speaking and writing sections, listening and reading sections, and takes approximately 3 hours. PTE scores range from 10 to 90. Most universities that accept IELTS also accept PTE Academic, and UK Visas and Immigration specifically accepts PTE for the UK student visa application. PTE is often considered by test-takers to have more objective, consistent scoring since there is no human element, and the results are typically available within 48 hours — much faster than IELTS (usually 3 to 5 days) or TOEFL (4 to 8 days).

IELTS vs TOEFL vs PTE — Direct Comparison

Availability and test centres: IELTS is available at over 1,600 test centres in India across major and smaller cities. TOEFL has fewer test centres — primarily major cities. PTE has around 100+ test centres in India. Cost in India (2026 approximate): IELTS Academic — Rs 16,250; TOEFL iBT — Rs 17,000; PTE Academic — Rs 15,900. Score availability: IELTS — 3 to 5 days; TOEFL — 4 to 8 days; PTE — 48 hours. Validity: All three are valid for 2 years from the test date. Human examiner: IELTS has a human for the speaking section; TOEFL speaking is recorded and assessed by evaluators; PTE is entirely computer scored. Best for UK: IELTS or PTE — both are fully accepted for UK student visa and most UK universities. Best for USA: TOEFL or IELTS — both fully accepted. Best for Germany: IELTS or TOEFL — both accepted by German universities and the German student visa. Best for Australia: IELTS or PTE — both accepted by Australian universities and the Australian student visa. Best for Canada: IELTS or TOEFL — both accepted; IELTS is more commonly specified.

Which Test Should You Choose?

The honest answer is: choose the test that plays to your strengths and that you can score highest on. Here is a practical guide to choosing. Choose IELTS if you are more comfortable with a human speaking examiner and feel you perform better in a face-to-face conversation than speaking to a computer screen, if you are applying primarily to UK or Australian universities (where IELTS is the most commonly specified test), or if you have plenty of test centres near you. Choose TOEFL if you are applying primarily to the USA (where TOEFL has historically been the more standard choice), if you are a strong reader and writer and less comfortable with conversational speaking, or if your target universities specifically list TOEFL as their preferred test. Choose PTE Academic if you want the fastest results (48 hours is genuinely faster), if you prefer fully computer-based testing with no human element (some test-takers find this less stressful), or if test centre availability near you is limited for IELTS. Bottom line: take a free practice test for each format before you decide. ETS provides free TOEFL practice tests, the British Council provides free IELTS practice tests, and Pearson provides free PTE practice tests. An hour of practice on each format will tell you more about which suits you than any comparison article.
